Somber Smithing Stones Farming Guide
Recommended Weapon Level for the DLC
+24 for Standard and + 9 For Somber Weapons
Due to the difficulty of the DLC, we recommend starting the Shadow of the Erdtree with at least +24 Non-Somber or +9 Somber Weapons. Unless you're playing in an NG+ cycle, +24 or +9 should be more than enough for the early and mid-game of the DLC.

Only Upgrade To Max Level if Finalizing Your Build
Since max upgrade stones are limited per New Game cycle, you should only +25 or +10 a weapon if you plan to use it as your main weapon for the DLC. Otherwise, it would be better to save them up in case one of the new DLC weapons appeals to your playstyle.
Best DLC Weapons to Upgrade
Weapon | Scaling | Why Upgrade It? |
---|---|---|
Backhand Blade | STR: D DEX: D | Backhand Blades are perfect for players who want to give their DEX builds more variety, offering the agility of a dagger with the reach of a regular katana. |
Black Steel Greathammer | STR: D DEX: D | A great STR+FAI weapon that caters to the Guard Counter playstyle since it gets empowered when used to counterattack. |
Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword | STR: D DEX: E ARC: D | This unique weapon scales with STR and ARC, making it perfect for ARC builds that center around colossals and Dragon Communion incantations. |
Dragon-Hunter's Great Katana | STR: D DEX: D | On of the new Great Katanas available in the DLC. Its a great STR+DEX weapon that can also deal bonus damage against dragons using its Ash of War. |
Milady | STR: D DEX: D | Milady is Light Greatsword that has a unique moveset which allows its light and heavy attacks to flow seamlessly together. Perfect for builds that have highly aggressive playstyles. |
Star-Lined Sword | STR: E DEX: C INT: D | The Star-Lined Sword is a DEX-INT katana that can perform sweeping AoE attacks that deal magic damage. Perfect as a main-hand weapon for INT builds if you're tired of the Moonveil. |
Sword of Night | DEX: C | Sword of Night is a DEX-scaling katana that has an Ash of War similar to Rivers of Blood's Corpse Piler. Offering high stagger damage and the ability to proc Bleed, this weapon can fit into any pure DEX build's arsenal. |
Rellana's Twin Blades | STR: D FAI: D DEX: D INT: D | Probably one of the most unique weapons in the DLC, Rellana's Twin Blades are the Sword of Night and Flame equivalent for Spellsword builds. |
Sword of Darkness | STR: D DEX: E FAI: E | While it isn't the Blasphemous Blade, the Sword of Darkness is a great FAI weapon to add to your build since its Ash of War has great AoE damage on top of decent STR scaling for hybrid STR-FAI builds. |
Pata | STR: D DEX: D | The Pata is a fist weapon with some of the longest reach in the game. If you're tired of your Star Fists and Katars missing in combat, then definitely get and upgrade this weapon for a more satisfying, fist-only run. |
