Do we think McK was actually serious about leaving? 20:56 - May 27 with 5477 viewsBlaggers12

As all the pieces start to come together, I think Brighton were serious about getting McK, and that in reality Chelsea and Man Utd were not. Much as we love him and all that, to the outsider, McK getting a job at a top 6 club this early in his career just seemed a little far fetched. Either way his agent has played a blinder, but I reckon any new contract comes with a £10m+ release clause. Do you think he was serious about going, or was this a bargaining tool for a new deal?

Man Utd yes, no to Chelsea or Brighton.
It is his agents job to explore possibilities for his client.

Agree. I think a top 6 offer was always going to be seriously considered, albeit Chelsea is a basket case and Man U, despite being his boyhood club, simply aren't ready for his tenure until they get their house in order.

I've no doubt he will be at a top six club in less than 5 years. He has all of the attributes, he just needs a more stable environment.

I think KM is a man who likes to know what his options are, and I am the same way with my job - sometimes i will apply for a job in the same industry to network and see how much I can negotiate my contract before being scoffed at.

Also think he's now put himself (via his agents) under much more external pressure and scrutiny.

There was no expectation on Ipswich from outside observers, but having indexed himself with Utd and Chelsea, the eyes are now on him to live up to his own hype.

Which may be good for us. KMcK totally focussed on doing his best for ITFC because his reputation is at stake.

100% same for me.

Also have reservations about how far things had got with Palace - I don't doubt some were getting info from sources that were usually reliable for them, but a 'U-turn' sounds most un-KM-like, and really only he, his family, execs at both clubs & his agent know exactly what did or didn't happen.

I think he was blatantly fishing for another job and had talks with 3 other clubs. I like to think he’d still be really happy to manage us.

Hopefully this latest rumour is true and we can move on and build on last seasons success.

I think his agent has had the club against a rock and a hard place and if reports are true that we are the highest paying team for a manager doesn’t feel right for our status.

Look..I don't think he was out fishing but its his agents job to take on inquiries from other clubs and Present them to kieran..in return kieran can use these offers as a negotiating chip ..with his current employer ..remember. he has got the club 120 million..keep us up..and the same amount

To be fair - latest reports suggest he turned Chelsea down, so yes I think Chelsea at least were serious. Who knows whether McKenna was

🚨 Kieran McKenna turned down Chelsea and will sign a new deal at Ipswich that will make him one of the highest paid managers in the Premier League. 💰

If Chelsea would appoint Maresca, why not McKenna? I think KM was never interested in Chelsea and was interested to hear what the Brighton offer was.

Who knows? Only McKenna. However, giving it a guess, I’d go with your and MK1s thoughts on this.

Assuming what has been reported is correct, it’ll be interesting to hear what KM, MA have to say about it all.

None of us really know what KM is like.

Of course not as a person, (unless any of us are lucky enough to actually know him), but he's given a 2-year indication of how he goes about things as a professional manager.

Obviously he's subject to the same human feelings as the rest of us, but there's just something about the Palace story that doesn't stack up for me - can't put my finger on it, just instinct, I might well be talking bollox for all I know!

Agree with this.

KMcK is a bright bloke and it's clear he's managing his own price very effectively.

In the space of 2 years, at the age of 38, he's now one of the hottest properties in world football.

If Kompany is anything to go by, Kieran's reputation can't really go down even if we finish in the relegation places next season.

This meteoric rise comes on the back of him being targeted by premier league clubs and there's no reason to doubt that he and his agent managed that to some extent while all the time staying risk free while with us.

It may have appeared from the outside that Kieran was close to leaving for Palace and perhaps even for Brighton, and in truth we'll never know for sure because even the man himself isn't going to admit that if it wasn't true.

Regardless, I'm happy we have a smart manager for a little while longer at least and there's no doubt that until now the Club and Kieran McKenna have been very good for each other..

Reputation is important for a manger at the highest level, so I suspect that both parties will continue to respect each other next time there is speculation over his future.

While KMcK has somewhat stolen the headlines this last week, my admiration, gratitude and faith in Mark Ashton has gone through the roof.

Similar. I've been approached by other employers and spoken with them to see what's on offer. Not because I wanted to leave my then/current job. It's quite healthy to see what's out there. I think most are similar.

KM speaking with them doesn't destroy future options with them, quite the opposite in fact.

Not really, no. I posted the answer a week or so back from his family member. He wants the United job of course he does but also recognises he needs to do more work. Fergie is his idol and mentor and the consensus is it’s not the right time, which has been fairly obvious from day one.

Chelsea and Brighton were simply opportunities to stir the pot and drum up a better deal as they both coincided with the manager awards ceremony.

When you go fishing you don’t always catch what you are after. Manure are in chaos with their recruitment team on gardening leave and one facing a court case. He couldn’t really be seen to be negotiating with them, even though he was - and it would be an impossible job to take on.

Chelsea was probably real - but possibly ruinous to his reputation - and Brighton have hit their glass ceiling and will plummet - so whilst both offered lottery winners no now and for failure if Manure isn’t a realistic option trousering a few million more for doing the same job is a good short term option

An experienced gravy trai rider like Poch can parachute his hangars on in and do a better job in the sort term. But he’ll be gone in 2 years.

Exactly,

If he keeps us up which I believe he will he would have netted the club 240 million+.

Paying him 10 million of that would be good business.

If he gets poached then anything north of a 10 million release clause and his salary would be covered anyway. Win win for everyone.
